Creating spaces that feel safe

Design has the power to shape how we feel. So, as we mark this year’s International Day of Happiness, it’s worth reflecting on how a considered choice of materials can create a positive sensory experience and genuinely support wellbeing.

In commercial environments, whether hospitality venues, shared living spaces or public buildings, the sense of emotional safety, comfort and confidence people experience is just as important as physical protection. At the heart of this is an understanding that inclusive design enables everyone to use and enjoy a space confidently. By embracing choice, flexibility and practical detail, inclusive environments remove barriers and reduce stigma, ensuring that everyone can feel welcome and in control of their surroundings.

Flooring plays a particularly crucial role in both physical and emotional safety. It is one of the few design elements experienced visually, physically and intuitively. Surfaces that are predictable and safe underfoot, aesthetically calming and seamlessly integrated into the surrounding architecture can help reduce anxiety, especially for users living with neurodiversity, neurodegenerative conditions or disabilities, while clear transitions, reduced glare and consistent patterning will support orientation and familiarity, contributing to a sense of control and comfort.

This is where performance-led but design-conscious flooring becomes essential. Our new Opus collection was developed precisely to meet this need. Every design across the extended range now offers 36+ slip resistance (assessed using a pendulum wet test), providing long-term performance in high-risk areas without imposing a visually intrusive surface texture.

For designers and specifiers, this means safety and visual appeal no longer need to compete. Performance and design can now coexist seamlessly. With Karndean, a beautifully designed space can also feel like a safe space.

Inspired by natural materials and crafted to evoke authenticity and calm, the Opus range introduces ten new wood and stone designs with both practicality and biophilic familiarity. These qualities are particularly valuable in environments such as aged-living developments, where residents may experience memory loss, sensory sensitivities or reduced mobility. In these situations, a single continuous flooring design across key areas can support both safe movement and emotional reassurance, helping spaces feel coherent and non-stigmatizing.

When creating intentional environments with neurodivergent users in mind, the use of predictable patterns, subtle tonal variation and low-contrast detailing can help reduce cognitive load and ensure the space feels comfortable. With wellbeing strongly connected to how confidently people can engage with their environment, it’s clear that thoughtfully specified flooring will be integral to achieving a reassuring sense of safety. In busy commercial settings, opting for flooring like Opus that balances natural design and visual calm with durability and enhanced slip resistance will contribute to a more inclusive and happier space.

As we mark this year’s International Day of Happiness, we invite architects, designers and specifiers to consider how every material decision can not only support physical safety and hygiene but also contribute to comfort, reduced anxiety and a more positive user experience, key factors in delivering truly inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive.
