The brief

Trevillion Interiors, working alongside Stanley Bragg Architects, were commissioned to transform a large garden centre into a warm, design-led destination capable of handling exceptionally high footfall. The redevelopment required clearly defined customer zones and finishes that could deliver long-term durability without compromising on aesthetic quality.

Karndean flooring was specified throughout the main concourse and seating areas for its resilience, design versatility and proven performance in demanding commercial environments. Cadman Flooring successfully delivered the full installation within an eight‑week programme, ensuring a high‑quality finish while meeting the project’s tight schedule.

The concept

The design introduced three customer zones; grownup, casual and family, each with a distinct identity while maintaining a cohesive journey through the building. With such a large open plan layout, the flooring needed to guide movement naturally and support different user experiences across the space.

Karndean’s large format planks enabled a strong directional herringbone pattern to be used in the main concourse, creating a clear visual route for customers. In contrast, parquet style patterns and straight planks were used in surrounding seating areas to differentiate each zone while still feeling part of the same environment.

Frances Blackham, design director at Trevillion Interiors: “Durability and aesthetic was a tough ask on such a scale with demanding footfall. The directional herringbone choreographs customer movement, while parquet and straight planks with inserts create three clearly identifiable areas.”

The look

The finished scheme delivers a refined yet practical flooring design that supports both navigation and ambience.

The large format herringbone layout acts as an architectural feature, naturally directing footfall through the concourse, while contrasting plank styles define the adjacent zones without interrupting flow.

Warm wood tones complement the garden centre’s natural identity, and the precision of the installation provides a premium retail feel. The flooring withstands heavy daily traffic, trolleys and regular cleaning, ensuring the space continues to look its best.

Kieran Cadman, director of Cadman Flooring: “The herringbone layout adds depth and elevates the interior beyond a standard retail fitout, while the design strip creates subtle zoning that supports customer movement.”
