The Challenge
Hempfield Animal Hospital in Lancaster, Pa., offers wellness exams, diagnostic services, and dental and surgical procedures for household pets. When the facility’s sheet vinyl flooring became discolored, business owner Dr. William Edkin decided to evaluate other types of flooring.
A new floor would need to withstand constant “paw and claw traffic.” Dr. Edkin also prioritized flooring that would be easier to clean and demand less maintenance than sheet vinyl, which required expensive, time-consuming stripping and waxing.
“We would bring in a cleaning service on weekends, which meant moving all the furniture each time,” Dr. Edkin said. “It was inconvenient.”
The Solution
Dr. Edkin learned about Karndean Designflooring LVT from other businesses in town. Impressed by the flooring’s durability and performance – Karndean LVT is waterproof and scratch-resistant while requiring no special maintenance – he visited a Karndean retailer, Certified Carpet.
“We were hoping to find something with a modern look, something that looked commercial,” Dr. Edkin said.
He ultimately chose the Texo design, an industrial aesthetic that blends copper and grey tones on 6” x 36” planks. Texo is part of the Opus collection, which features gluedown LVT with a 20 mil wear layer.
“The linear design complements the office really well. It’s a sharp look,” Dr. Edkin says.
The Results
Texo was installed throughout the facility, including the reception area, hallways, exam rooms and surgical room. The Certified Carpet team worked with Dr. Edkin to complete installation without closing the office, which was possible, in part, because the new floor could be laid over the sheet vinyl.
Staff and patients have given the flooring positive reviews. Maintenance is no longer required on weekends, and cleaning is as simple as a damp mop and pH neutral cleaner.
