The effects of lighting on Luxury Vinyl

In the commercial sector, the design and ambience of space play a crucial role in shaping customer experiences and influencing their perceptions. One often overlooked but essential aspect of interior design is lighting. The way a space is lit can significantly affect the appearance and performance of luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring.

Lighting, both natural and artificial, significantly affects how your flooring looks in your project. Different lighting conditions can alter the perception of your floor's colours, patterns, and textures. To avoid surprises, it’s crucial to consider how various lighting scenarios will impact the appearance of Karndean’s LVT flooring.

Lighting dramatically changes the appearance of the flooring. The same floor can look quite different under the bright glare of commercial lighting compared to natural sunlight. To avoid surprises, we strongly recommend getting samples of several colourways to compare as the angle and amount of sunlight in your home changes throughout the day. (Note: You also can order free swatch samples on the product pages of our website).

Natural light Vs. Artificial light

The orientation of your project affects how much sunlight different rooms receive. In Australia, rooms with north-facing windows receive the most direct sunlight; east-facing rooms get more morning sun, while west-facing rooms get more in the afternoon.

Natural light:

  • North-facing rooms: Receive the most direct sunlight, enhancing the natural beauty of wood-look LVT.
  • East-facing rooms: Capture morning sunlight, adding a warm, inviting glow.
  • West-facing rooms: Benefit from afternoon sunlight, highlighting textures and patterns.

Artificial light:

  • Warm Lighting: This creates a cozy, inviting atmosphere. Ideal for enhancing the warm tones of wood-look LVT.
  • Cool Lighting: Feels vibrant and modern. Perfect for contemporary spaces
  • Accent Lighting: Use strategically to highlight key areas and reduce glare. Spotlights can emphasise textures and patterns, while ambient lighting can create a balanced look.

Colour temperature and ambience

Colour temperature, ranging from warm to cool, is measured on the Kelvin Scale from 1,000 (candlelight) to 10,000 (clear blue sky). The lighting you choose within that range, combined with the tone of the flooring, paint, and furnishings, will affect the ambience of your space.

  • Warm Lighting (1,000 - 3,000 Kelvin): This creates a cozy, inviting mood, perfect for residential spaces or areas where you want to encourage relaxation.
  • Neutral Lighting (3,000 - 5,000 Kelvin): Balanced and versatile, suitable for a wide range of commercial applications.
  • Cool Lighting (5,000 - 10,000 Kelvin): Feels crisp and modern, ideal for contemporary designs and high-energy environments.
