The Challenge
The law offices of Epstein Becker Green in Los Angeles included both carpet and marble. Among other issues, the carpet looked dated, while the marble created a lot of noise.
Designer Catie Underhill of Wolcott Architecture sought flooring that was visually appealing and functional for a renovation that included the main corridor and a collaboration area.
“These spaces are used by both clients and employees, so we needed something that was both aesthetically pleasing and functional,” Underhill said.

The Solution
In collaboration with the client, Underhill chose Karndean LVP: Pearl Oak from the Karndean LooseLay collection. Visually, Pearl Oak has a slightly distressed appearance that adds a touch of character.
“They loved the warmer wood tones,” Underhill said.
Along with a variety of stylish wood and stone visuals, LooseLay offers several performance benefits:
- LooseLay is made with a K-Wave® friction-grip backing, which holds the flooring in place – full-spread adhesive is not required, saving time and labor during installation. (Note: LooseLay can be fully glued if preferred.)
- SureFit® technology provides enhanced dimensional stability, eliminating the need for expansion gaps.
- The sound-absorbing K-Wave® backing also contributes to impressive acoustic benefits, reducing noise in multi-story environments by up to 22 dB.
- Single planks and tiles can be easily lifted and replaced.
The K-Wave® backing also offers extra cushion to the 4.5 mm thick planks – another key consideration.
“We wanted something for standing on for longer periods of time,” Underhill said.
Like all Karndean luxury vinyl, LooseLay is waterproof and easy to clean. No harsh chemicals, waxing, noisy machinery or expensive, time-consuming maintenance are needed.
The Results
Underhill was so impressed with the installation that she’s used Pearl Oak elsewhere.
“I love it. Now that I’ve seen the end result, I keep incorporating it for other projects,” the designer said.
